Featherstone the Flamingo
About Featherstone
Featherstone the Flamingo is a pink plastic lawn ornament who makes predictions for the municipality of Leominster, Massachusetts. Featherstone is a beloved tradition kept alive by the dapper but groundhog-phobic mayor, Dean Mazzarella. “That slimy groundhog will be out there Sunday morning,” the longtime mayor has said. “And here we are with a beautiful pink flamingo.” On the theme of groundhogs, he swears that “there is no street named after a rodent, I’ve looked this up. Rodents are yucky, they carry disease, there’s nothing fun about them.” To conclude, he declares: “Forget the rodent. We don’t allow that here.”
Unlike virtually every other groundhog, Featherstone predicts an early spring when he sees his shadow.
